Brussels, 02/08/2013 (Agence Europe) - European Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas has suggested that the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council should discuss issues pertaining to the recent train accident in Spain and the coach accident in Italy, in which a total of close to 100 people died in July.
In a Tweet, he affirmed he had asked the rotating Union Presidency to include these disasters on the agenda of the Transport Council on 10 October this year. He underlined that it was important to follow up the recent accidents. Until the results of the investigations conducted by the national authorities have been communicated, the Commission is not able to act to prevent this kind of tragedy from occurring. Earlier, Commissioner Kallas had insisted on the importance of investigating the causes of the recent accidents, saying that safety was his first priority and that he would do whatever it takes at EU level to ensure transport safety.
