Strasbourg, 04/07/2013 (Agence Europe) - European Commissioner for Trade Karel De Gucht wants to involve all stakeholders in the textile industry in Bangladesh in a pact to improve work and safety conditions.
De Gucht will host a meeting in Geneva on 8 July to launch a multipartite initiative aiming to improve the work and safety conditions for workers in Bangladesh's textile industry and to promote the industry's social responsibility in the wake of the collapse of the Rana Plaza complex at Savar, near Dacca. The collapse of the Rana Plaza complex was the latest tragic episode in a series of industrial accidents in Bangladesh, which left 1,127 people dead.
The initiative, called the sustainability compact, will bring together representatives from the EU and the governments of Bangladesh and the USA, and from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) with employees, employers and representatives from the textile industry. (EH/transl.fl)
