Brussels, 04/07/2013 (Agence Europe) - In a resolution adopted on Wednesday 3 July, MEPs showed their support for the establishment of a common definition for serious traffic injuries and more broadly to the European Commission's strategy aimed at reducing the number of seriously injured to ensure better protection of vulnerable road users.
MEPs call on the Commission to define a 40% reduction target of bodily harm due to road accidents for the period 2014-2020. During the debate prior to voting, Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas confirmed his hope of obtaining results similar to those relating to the reduction of fatalities on the road, by fixing clear objectives for the seriously injured.
Furthermore, MEPs are interested in looking at speed limits of 30 km/hr and call on the Commission to provide an overview of the impact that such speed limits would have on the number of people killed or seriously injured on Europe's roads.
The director of the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), Antonio Avenoso, congratulated the European Parliament on its determination to improve road safety by tackling the issue of those seriously injured due to traffic accidents. (MD/transl.jl)
