MEPs scrutinise flying time

Brussels, 19/06/2013 (Agence Europe) - The Parliamentary committee for transport and tourism (TRAN) has been receiving information from stakeholders regarding the review of flying time limits. The dossier is being addressed according to the comitology procedure, which means that MEPs will not be able to amend the Commission proposal (on the basis of a report from the European Aviation Safety Agency, EASA) but will have to agree to it or reject it as it stands. It is therefore crucial that MEPs are sufficiently well informed regarding this very controversial review, fatigue being cited as one of the causes of increased risk to aviation safety. EASA representatives, airlines, unions and the British Civil Aviation Authority answered the questions of the TRAN committee, which mainly focused on the scientific validity of the proposed new rules, 11-hour night flights and standby conditions.
