Brussels, 17/06/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 14 June, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton welcomed the announcement that elections would be held in Nepal on 19 November. She called on all concerned “to adopt a constructive attitude to ensure the widest possible political commitment for national elections in November and local elections as soon as possible, allowing the people of Nepal to achieve their democratic aspirations”. “The consolidation of the transition in Nepal, including the establishment of stable democratically elected institutions, is a prerequisite for its successful development. At this stage, it is essential to move forward in the electoral process”, stated Ashton's spokesperson. The spokesperson said that the EU remains ready to bring its support to the election process - including through the deployment of an election observation mission. Nepal has been in a legislative void since the fall of an interim constituent assembly in May 2012, which failed to write a new constitution after a ten-year civil war. (CG/transl.fl)
