Hungary must act to protect laboratory animals

Brussels, 30/05/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, European Commission took the next stage in the infringement proceedings against Hungary for persistent failure to respect EU rules on the welfare of animals used in scientific experiments. Hungary will be sent a reasoned opinion (the second stage in the infringement proceedings) because, despite an initial warning letter, it has still not transposed into national law the EU directive requiring a reduction in the use of animals for scientific experiments and the use of other methods where possible. The transposition deadline was 10 November 2012.

Hungary is asked to bring its rules into line with the EU directive. It has two months to do so, failing which the Commission could fine it and refer it to the European Court of Justice.

In response to a warning letter sent on 31 January 2013, Hungary informed the Commission about the relevant provisions in March 2013, but the Commission is still concerned that certain provisions have not been included in Hungary's law. In particular, Hungarian laws do not seem to ensure sufficient protection for primates used in experiments. (AN/transl.fl).
