Brussels, 30/05/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 20 May, the Council of the EU and the European Parliament decided to grant €46 million in aid for Georgia under the EU's macroeconomic aid programme for countries facing short-term balance of payments problems.
In a joint statement, the two EU institutions note the need to draw up a regulatory framework to allow sensible and effective decisions are taken on macroeconomic aid to struggling countries outside the EU, explains the Council of Ministers in a press release. The agreement on Georgia paves the way for aid in the future for Kirghizstan and Jordan (for which the European Commission has already published aid proposals) and also for Egypt and Armenia, which have both requested aid from the EU.
