Brussels, 26/04/2013 (Agence Europe) - A spokesperson for EU High Representative Catherine Ashton said on Friday 25 April that, if confirmed, the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian loyalist army would be unacceptable and the EU was closely monitoring the situation and hoped the UN would carry out an investigation into the matter.
Following the United States, the British prime minister, David Cameron, said there was growing proof of extremely serious use of chemical weapons, but said there was no need to send in international troops.
Ashton criticised the kidnapping in Aleppo of bishops Boulos Yazigi and Yohanna Ibrahim. She said that violence must not be carried out against religious officials, innocent civilians and humanitarian workers. (MB/transl.fl)
