Brussels, 25/04/2013 (Agence Europe) - There will soon be 28 European Commissioners. On Thursday 25 April, Mr Neven Mimica was fielded by Croatia as commissioner designate for consumer policy. The president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, held a meeting with Mimica and agreed to his application. Barroso is planning to make the new commissioner responsible for consumer protection.
Maltese Commissioner Tonio Borg will, in future, only have responsibility for health, not consumer protection. After consulting the European Parliament, the Council of Ministers will decide on the appointment of the new commissioner in agreement with the president of the Commission so that he can take up office on 1 July 2013.
Mimica is currently Croatian deputy foreign and European integration minister. He has worked for a long time to prepare for Croatia to join European Union and also has long experience as a minister and diplomatic adviser. (LC/transl.fl)
