Brussels, 22/03/2013 (Agence Europe) - The appointment of Mary Robinson as Ban Ki-moon's Special Envoy to for the African Great Lakes Region has been welcomed by the EU, which also announced that it would be closely cooperating with her.
In a statement published on 19 March, Catherine Ashton, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, declared that, “in her previous capacities, including as President of Ireland and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms Robinson has demonstrated her commitment to peace, democracy and human rights”.
The high representative also expressed “the EU's willingness to work closely with the office of the Special Envoy in support for the implementation of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Great Lakes region of Africa”. (AN/transl.fl)
