Brussels, 22/03/2013 (Agence Europe) -The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) recently expressed concern that no EU member state has yet ratified the International Labour Organisation (ILO) 2011 Convention on decent working conditions for domestic workers. Things are now changing and the European Commission now urges member states to “ratify this Convention as soon as possible, which will also contribute to implementing the EU strategy against trafficking in human beings”, said EU Social Affairs Commissioner Laszlo Andor on Thursday 21 March 2013.
To this effect, the Commission has put a draft decision to the EU Council of Ministers authorising member states to ratify the convention, an authorisation needed because some sections of the convention are governed by EU powers, explains the Commission in a press release. The ILO says that the convention “lays down basic rights and principles, and requires states to take a series of measures with a view to making decent work a reality for domestic workers and its government formally makes a commitment to implement all the obligations provided in the convention, and to report periodically to the ILO on the measures taken in this regard”.
