Brussels, 22/03/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 21 March, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton condemned the attacks on targets on the Lebanese soil by the Syrian armed forces, Ashton's spokesperson states in a press release. “These actions constitute a violation of Lebanon's sovereignty. Attacks against any of the neighbouring countries are unacceptable”, he added. “Lebanon is not party to the Syrian conflict and has publicly dissociated itself from that conflict. This needs to be respected by all sides in Syria, by all actors in Lebanon, as well as third countries”, the spokesperson added. He reiterated the EU's commitment to Lebanon's sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and unity. Ashton has repeatedly warned of a possible spill-over of the Syrian conflict.
The EU welcomed the United Nations Security Initiative to investigate the possible use of chemical weapons in Syria, Ashton's spokesperson told EUROPE. “The EU remains seriously concerned about their potential use in Syria and reminds the Syrian regime and other parties that, in case of their use, those responsible will be held accountable”, he added.
