EU calls for political dialogue “without delay”

Brussels, 06/03/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 5 March, the spokespersons for the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton and for the Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Füle took note of the act of no confidence adopted by the Moldovan Parliament against its government. On the same day, the two EU officials called on members of the Moldovan Parliament to engage in political dialogue without delay. In a joint press release they emphasised that they were calling, “on all the political groups and non-affiliated Members of the Moldovan Parliament to engage in genuine political dialogue without delay, with a view to achieving a strong and stable majority committed to promoting democratic values and the rule of law as well as pursuing the path towards political association and economic integration with the EU, for the benefit of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova”.

They also explained that this no-confidence vote have taken place despite Moldova making “substantial progress” in its visa liberalisation process and the completion of ambitious negotiations on an EU-Moldova Association Agreement, which “is in sight”.

The Moldovan parliament has dismissed the government led by Vladimir Filat (Liberal-Democrat Party). Fifty-four MPs - Communists, Democrats and Independents - were behind this procedure and voted in favour of the no-confidence vote, which required 51 votes to be valid. (CG/transl.fl)
