Brussels, 18/02/2013 (Agence Europe) - The European Union has released €1.5 million to help a number of countries provide better protection of their borders with the EU to clamp down on organised crime and people trafficking, announced the European Commission in a press release on Monday, the countries in question being Turkey, Bosnia Herzegovina, Azerbaijan and Moldova. This is a pilot project funded by the EU Stability Instrument to ensure the countries become better equipped for dealing with human trafficking by for instance installing information-sharing systems with neighbouring countries and training their police forces. A second phase will begin in the summer of 2014, which will provide aid to the victims of people-trafficking. The pilot scheme is part of the EU's move to clamp down on illegal immigration that was unveiled in June 2012 by EU Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmström. (SP/transl.fl)
