François Hollande visits Athens

Brussels, 18/02/2012 (Agence Europe) - The French president, François Hollande, will meet the Greek prime minister, Antonis Samaras, in Athens on Tuesday, bringing a message of support for the Greeks after all the sacrifices they have endured, sacrifices that have been more painful than in other countries. In an interview published on Monday with Greek centre-left newspaper Ta Nea, Hollande said that consolidation of public finance was necessary but not sufficient and measures had to be taken to support growth. He said he would not allow Europe to condemn countries to endless austerity. France recently admitted that it will not be able to reduce its public deficit to 3% in 2013 as initially planned. The troika of lenders to Greece (the European Commission, the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank) will be back in Athens on Monday 25 February. (EL/transl.fl)
