18/02/2013 (Agence Europe) - EU's call for respect of international obligations towards detainees. On 16 February, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton called on the government of Israel to fully respect international obligations on human rights towards all detainees and prisoners, Ashton's spokesperson stated in a press release. Reiterating its “longstanding” concern on the extensive use by Israel of administrative detention orders, Ashton also called on Israel to bring formal charges against any individuals detained “with a view to bringing them to a fair trial without any undue delay”. She recalled international law. Ashton also called on Israel to allow the restoration of visiting rights to the families of Ayman Sharawna, Samer Issawi, Jafar Ezzedin and Tareq Qaa'dan, who have been on hunger strike since the end of December and in detention in Israel. Their health is therefore deteriorating. (CG/transl.fl)
