Brussels, 11/02/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 11 February, the European Commission and the European travel agents' and tour operators' associations (ECTAA) called on travel professionals to promote the European emergency number 112 on their websites, on e-tickets and at major tourist destinations. A year ago, the Commission asked transport companies to make the 112 number known to travellers through an information campaign. “Transport companies are already helping raise awareness. Now it's the turn of tour operators and agents to step up and help. European citizens should know that help is only one call away, wherever they are in the EU”, European Commissioner for the Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes said. Boris Zgomba, the head of ECTAA, stated that “a single emergency number (…) is of great benefit for travellers - our customers”. He added that these customers “may not necessarily know which local number to dial in case of emergency when travelling outside their home country”. The 112 emergency number can be dialled free of charge from a fixed or mobile phone anywhere in the European Union. It enables the caller to be linked to the relevant emergency service 24 hours per day, seven days per week in several European languages. (IL/transl.fl)
