Brussels, 11/02/2013 (Agence Europe) - Over the weekend of 9-10 February, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Androulla Vassiliou attended the 14th EU Studies Fair, held in Brussels every year and organised by European Voice. The fair brought together around 400 future higher education students as well as representatives from universities and the European institutions. While there, Vassiliou recalled the urgent need of the world of work for qualified labour that is specialised in new technologies - at a time when youth unemployment is recording dramatic statistics, particularly in Spain and Greece. “Despite high unemployment across Europe, we still have two million unfilled vacancies where we cannot find people with the right skills”, she said. Vassiliou pointed out that over the next three years, the High Level Group for the modernisation of higher education - a group recently set up - will be looking at how best to achieve quality and excellence in teaching and to adapt learning to the digital age, increasing the use of ICT and open educational resources (teaching, learning and research materials able to be freely distributed or adapted). She also pointed out that she was preparing a strategy this year for the internationalisation of higher education. (IL/transl.fl)
