Dublin to reach general approach on quotas in June?

Brussels, 11/01/2013 (Agence Europe) - Despite the considerable differences between member states on how they view a 40% quota for women on the boards of companies quoted on the stock exchange (see EUROPE 10759),the Irish Presidency is seeking to reach a general approach on this subject. Dublin has placed the initiative by Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Gender Equality, on the agenda of the Employment, Social Affairs and Health Council scheduled for 20 and 21 June. Ministers are also expected to endorse conclusions on the place of women in the media, especially in terms of decision-making. The Irish Presidency's initiative falls, indeed, within the context of the UN Beijing Platform for Action. Traditionally, each Presidency chooses to tackle one of the 12 priorities aimed at promoting women's rights. The Irish Presidency plans to carry out further work relating to gender equality, including a conference organised in Dublin on the economic involvement of women and the EUROPE 2020 strategy.
