Brussels, 11/01/2013 (Agence Europe) - High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton said she was “deeply disappointed” at the decision of the Bahraini Court of Cassation on 7 January, which upheld the sentences of 13 political activists who are sentenced with imprisonment ranging from five years' to life for having led a protest in 2011, a press release from Ashton's spokesperson states on 10 January. Ashton had expressed her hope for clemency for the human rights defenders and political activists detained in Bahrain due to their links with the events of 2011. “The High Representative takes this opportunity to call, once again, on the Bahraini Government to fully implement all the recommendations of the 2011 Bahrain Commission of Inquiry” Ashton's spokesperson said, adding that this is crucial “to build the mutual trust conducive to a meaningful and inclusive national dialogue as a key to address outstanding issues and prepare the ground for sustainable reforms”.
