Brussels, 13/12/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 13 December, MEPs asked the European Council, European Commission and European External Action Service (EEAS) to cooperate closely on implementing a coherent, ambitious and effective EU policy on human rights in the world - based on the EU's strategic framework on human rights. By adopting the report by Leonidas Donskis (ALDE, Lithuania) on the 2011 annual report on human rights and democracy in the world, the MEPs highlight that it is important for the EU to strengthen its policy on this and to express itself with a single voice. They recall the importance of coherence in order to avoid the allegations of “two weights, two measures”, and in order to support the political credibility of the EU and to show true respect for the universality of human rights. The Parliament wants all contractual relations with third countries (sectoral, trade, technical assistance or financial agreements) to include clauses on human rights and democracy. Furthermore, the MEPs call for stricter control on exports, on the transit and brokerage of dual usage goods. (CG/transl.fl)
