EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) burma/myanmar

29/11/2012 (Agence Europe) - Human rights. On 27 November, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton hailed the adoption by consensus the previous day of the resolution on the situation of human rights in Burma/Myanmar by the United Nations General Assembly's Third Committee. “I am particularly pleased by the constructive approach taken by the Government of Myanmar in working closely on the text with the EU, as the main sponsor”, Ashton said. The adoption of this resolution by consensus is a clear sign of the international community's commitment to supporting the reform process under way and the aspirations of the people of Myanmar, she said. The resolution highlights the country's efforts towards political reform, democratisation, national reconciliation and improvements in the situation of human rights, while recognising the remaining challenges - including the situation of ethnic minorities.
