Brussels, 23/11/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 22 November, the European Commission approved financial aid of €27.2 million to the Turkish Cypriot community in support of the economic integration of the island - “with the overall objective to help prepare for its reunification”, the Commission said. This funding will support, for example, the eradication of animal disease, protection of the environment, road safety, cultural heritage and civil society. “This new funding reflects the firm commitment of the European Union to the economic integration of the Turkish Cypriot community; through dialogue and mutual enrichment between the two communities we are continuing the support for the future reunification of the island”, said Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Füle. Since 2006 the European Union has invested more than €320 million under the aid programme for the Turkish Cypriot community. (CG/transl.fl)
