EU and Council of Europe support reforms

Brussels, 21/11/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 20 November, the Cypriot foreign affairs minister, Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis (on behalf of the high representative of the EU for foreign affairs), the secretary general of the Council of Europe, Thorbjorn Jagland, and the foreign affairs minister of Andorra, Gilbert Saboya (as president of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe) repeated their strong political support for the democratic reforms in the Mediterranean region, “in the interest of the Southern Mediterranean and Europe”. They spoke of their resolve to jointly pursue the provision of assistance to help these reforms - in particular, constitutional reform, holding free and fair elections, the protection and promotion of human rights, and reform of the judicial system, a press release says.

Kozakou-Marcoullis, Jagland and Saboya also stressed the importance of the contribution of education to human rights, the development of democracy and social cohesion. (CG/transl.fl)
