21/11/2012 (Agence Europe) - Ashton welcomes the amnesty of political prisoners. On Monday 19 November, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton welcomed the decision of the president of Burma, U Thein Sein, to grant an amnesty to political detainees. “The majority of political detainees have now been set free”, Ashton said. She hailed the undertaking of the government to establish a transparent review mechanism for remaining political prisoners. She added that the EU will continue to work with the government of Myanmar to deepen and broaden political and economic relations. Several hundred prisoners - including political prisoners - have been released. (CG/transl.fl)
