Füle wants new momentum for Union for Mediterranean

Brussels, 06/11/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 5 November, Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Füle said that the EU wants to give new momentum to regional cooperation, in particular via the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM). “The Union for the Mediterranean has a key role to play. With the EU assuming the UfM Northern co-presidency and Jordan as Southern co-president, we are working closely together to bring new impetus and more coherence to UfM activities”, Füle said at the meeting in Brussels of senior officials for European neighbourhood policy (ENP). He said that the EU and partner countries must “actively work all together to ensure the holding of important UfM ministerial meetings” in 2013, “in particular those on transport and energy”. He reminded his partners that their support is “very important” to ensure success. Füle said that their political dialogue should be more open and interactive. He regretted that progress on mobility and cooperation on complex migration issues had not been as great as he had hoped. He added that it is necessary to develop more partnerships between the EU and its partners. “I believe we all need to do more (…) More effective implementation of reforms, but also more attentive EU listening to partners' needs”, he said. “It will be very important for partners to keep up the momentum of reform, and for the EU to support this momentum effectively, so that we can move closer to the vision of the ENP - of a strong partnership between the EU and its neighbours for democracy, security and shared prosperity”, he concluded.
