Brussels, 26/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - The commissioner responsible for the digital agenda, Neelie Kroes, presented the iMobility award during the international congress on intelligent transport systems (ITS) in Vienna on Friday 26 October. She said it is necessary to seize every technological opportunity at a time when congestion is a very serious problem in Europe, and when one must manage energy resources better. She stressed that transport should be transformed in the urban environment in particular, and called for “smart cities”. “And there's particularly fertile ground at the intersection of ICT, transport and energy”, she said, adding: “In many cases, the ideas to power smart cities are already out there, the technology is available: we just need to deploy those inventions on the ground”. Kroes also highlighted the fact that €365 million have been made available by European funds for technological urban solutions. The iMobility competition rewards the application and the deployment of ITS in Europe. The European Commission wins in the policy category with the eCall project for road safety. In the national category the Austrian motorway company, Asfinag, won the day and, in the technological category, it was the Dutch company TNO that was rewarded. (MD/transl.jl)
