Brussels 23/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - On 22 October, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, visited the Zaatary camp for Syrian refugees. On this occasion, she reiterated the EU's wish to increase its aid in this area and paid homage to Jordanian hospitality and the work accomplished by humanitarian actors in the field.
At the end of her visit, Ashton declared that, “I also passed on our thanks for the superb work being done by the French and Italian field hospitals in the camp, and the tireless work of the international and local humanitarian agencies. The EU is ready to help with both humanitarian assistance and long term assistance to those affected by the fighting in Syria. It is a priority of mine to see to it that Syrian refugee children can continue with their schooling”.
EU aid channelled through UNICEF to fund education programmes in Jordan for Syrian refugees in 2012 currently stands at €10 million (see EUROPE 10705). (AN/trans/fl)
