Council lifts sanctions

Brussels, 27/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - On 27 September the Council decided to lift the sanctions against the former leaders of the region of Transnistria (Moldova), putting an end to the ban on their entering EU territory. This measure will come into force on Friday 28 September when it is published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

By lifting the sanctions which had been suspended in September 2010, the Council recognises “progress seen under the new leadership in negotiating certain aspects of a settlement of the Transnistrian conflict”. The negotiations were resumed in December after being interrupted for six years.

At the same time, the Council has “ensured” that the travel ban could be re-imposed on those blocking progress “regarding Latin-script Moldovan schools in Transnistria”. The relevant provisions have not been lifted but they no longer target specific persons, the Council says.

The Council also said that it will make periodic reviews of developments - whether this be in managing the conflict, ensuring the freedom of movement of persons, or resolving the situation of Latin-script Moldovan schools. (CG/transl.fl)
