Brussels, 26/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - European leaders have called for the “immediate” halt to the violence in Syria and for international community action. “How many deaths must we wait for before we take action? How can we accept the UN's inaction?”, asked French President François Hollande in his speech at the UN General Assembly. “Without delay, I call on the UN to grant the Syrian people all the aid they ask for - humanitarian aid and protection of the free zones.”
The Cypriot and Bulgarian presidents, Demetris Christofias and Rosen Plevneliev, called for “the immediate halt to the violence”. Christofias said that the increasing violence shows “an increased need for a political solution from the international community” and the scale of the humanitarian crisis. In Plevneliev's opinion, those responsible for the crimes must be tried, and he spoke of “an unacceptable level of blood”, calling for inclusive and democratic transition so that the new State might be a home that welcomes all. Hollande added that he will recognise the provisional government of Syria once it is formed and that it will have to guarantee that it will respect each community.
Qatar wants Arab military intervention. The crisis in Syria is a “serious and growing threat for international peace and security which demands the attention of the Security Council”, said Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon. “The situation is worsening every day”, he said, adding that “the international community must not ignore it while the violence escapes all control”. “We must put an end to the violence and the inflow of arms to the two camps, and we must implement a transition led by the Syrians themselves as quickly as possible”, he continued. “The future must not belong to a dictator who massacres his people”, said American President Barack Obama, adding that the Syrian regime must be submitted to sanctions and warning against sectarian violence. For his part, Qatar Emir Hamad ben Khalifa al-Thani called for action with military intervention from the Arab countries “in conformity with their national, humanitarian, political and military duties”, and he asked that they do “what needs to be done to put an end to the bloodbath”. Stressing that the situation is “unacceptable”, he said that all means possible must be used to get Syria out of this situation (our translation throughout). (CG/transl.fl)
