EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) ukraine

26/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - EU reminds Ukraine of accession agreement criteria. On Monday 24 September, Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Füle said that for relations between the EU and Ukraine to continue and for the association agreement to be signed, ratified and implemented, “the conduct of the upcoming parliamentary elections (on 28 October), the redress of the consequences of selective justice and further steps to reform the judiciary and overall progress in the implementation of the Association Agenda are critical.” Füle and the Ukrainian deputy prime minister, Valeriy Khoroshkovsky, discussed the necessity of taking concrete measures to improve the business climate in Ukraine and the necessity of strengthening Ukraine's system of public finance management. Füle said he was ill at ease with the current version of the Ukrainian law criminalising defamation, which raises concern. What is in question is its negative impact on freedom of the media.
