17/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - No Bildt-Timoshenko meeting. Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt was unable to visit the former Ukrainian prime minister, Yulia Timoshenko, on Sunday 16 September, as the authorities were opposed to his visit. Speaking on Twitter, the minister explained that, “today (Sunday) I should have been in Kharkov to see Yulia Timoshenko as she had requested but the authorities intervened”. According to the Ukrainian newspaper, KyivPost, that quoted Bildt, the law allows Timoshenko four hours of visits a month. Bildt explained that, “despite this, we were informed by the foreign minister that this was not possible”. He stressed that when he asked for an explanation, the Ukrainian minister explained that the refusal had come from the prison services. Nonetheless, according to one of the United Opposition co-presidents, the letter from the prison services did not contain any reference to his visit being refused. (CG/trans/fl)
