Attacks on European embassies unacceptable says Barroso

Brussels, 17/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - The attacks carried out on Friday 14 September against the German and British embassies in Khartoum in reprisal for the circulation of the Islamic phobic video “Innocence of Muslims” have been condemned in the strongest possible terms by the European Commission. José Manuel Barroso, the President of the Commission who spoke on Friday evening, described the attacks as “absolutely unacceptable”.

In a press release, he says: “we condemn it in the strongest terms. This is unacceptable, and it is against all the rules of the civilised world. Nothing justifies these kinds of attacks”. Barroso stressed that in his meeting with the Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi in Brussels on the day before the attacks, he had had the opportunity also to express his strong condemnation for attacks on Islam. Barroso stressed the need for respect for all religions and freedom of worship, “but nothing justifies violence against embassies, against diplomatic personnel, and I hope that all the issues can be treated in a peaceful, respectful way”, he said.
