EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) israel

13/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - Palestinian prisoners. On Tuesday 11 September, the former Franco-Palestinian prisoner, Salah Hamouri, who has spent seven years in Israeli jails, called on the EU to intervene in order to oblige Israel to apply international law and free Palestinian prisoners. Hamouri criticised the “often difficult” detention conditions, saying that until last April prisoners did not have the right to books, and he stressed that some of them were imprisoned for 23 hours a day and did not have any contacts with the outside world. He also spoke of administrative detentions and imprisonment without trial. He believes that Israel has also refused to allow the support of associations to imprisoned children who are isolated. Hamouri was arrested in March 2005 for belonging to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and for his intention to take part in a plot aiming to assassinate Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, which Hamouri has always denied. He was released in December 2011. (CG/transl.fl)
