EP wants to play full role in economic union

Brussels, 13/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament is determined to play its role, alongside the Council, Commission and European Central Bank (ECB), in the negotiations on deeper EU economic and monetary integration, ahead of the October European Council (see other article on Van Rompuy's ideas). On Thursday 13 September, the conference of presidents of the European Parliament groups appointed an EP delegation which will start work next week, led by President Martin Shulz and including Elmar Brok, Roberto Gualtieri, Guy Verhofstadt and Daniel Cohn-Bendit (substitute member).

The Parliament team will help draft the report “Towards a genuine economic and monetary union”, which will go to the EU's heads of state and government at the European Council of 18-19 October.

The Parliament delegation will been involved in drawing up a roadmap of measures designed to pave the way for banking, economic, fiscal and political union. This roadmap should be ready for adoption at the beginning of 2013. The EP could also help identify issues for a roadmap for 2014 and beyond. (LC/transl.fl)
