Strasbourg, 12/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 12 September, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, the European Parliament and its president, Martin Schulz, firmly condemned the shameful attack against the US Embassy in Benghazi, Libya. This attack cost the lives of four members of the consulate, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens. They have sent their condolences to the families of the victims and the US authorities. Ashton and Schulz have called on the Libyan authorities to do everything they can to bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice. The former also called on Libya to, “take all necessary measures without delay to protect the lives of all diplomats and foreign staff working in Libya”. The MEP pointed out that the US were there to help the country, “return to peace, stability and prosperity”.
French, Italian, Swedish and British foreign ministers also condemned the attack. Libya has officially presented its apologies to the US. The four Americans were killed by armed men protesting against the broadcasting of a film deemed insulting towards Islam. (CG/trans/fl)
