Brussels, 05/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - While awaiting the final results of the general elections of 31 August in Angola, the EU welcomes the smooth way in which these elections took place - elections which are deemed free, fair and transparent by all the foreign observation missions which were there.
“We take note of an overall efficient organisation of the voting process and the peaceful atmosphere that marked it. The Angolan people have again demonstrated their commitment to peace and multi-party democracy, in an important period in the country's development ten years after peace was achieved in 2002”, the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton said in the evening of 4 September.
The results so far show a large victory for the MPLA, the party of the current president, José Eduardo dos Santos, who is likely to remain in power for another five year mandate. (AN/transl.fl)
