High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton said than she was “disappointed and concerned” on 5 September by the decision of the Court of Appeal in Bahrain to uphold the harsh sentences against the protester Abdulhadi Al Khawaja and 19 other people. “I hope that the appeal before the Court of Cassation will be fair, transparent and conducted in the full respect of international obligations Bahrain has subscribed to”, Asthon said in a press release. She called on all parts of Bahraini society “to contribute to dialogue and national reconciliation in a peaceful and constructive manner”. (OL/transl.fl)
