Brussels, 03/08/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 3 August, the European Union approved three projects worth a total amount of €31.95 million to help the Kenyan government in its goal of transforming the country into a middle-income economy. These projects are funded under the 10th European Development Fund and focus on transport infrastructure and trade.
€15 million will go to a project for rebuilding rural highways (a total project value of €20 million) and maintaining roads (2010-2017) in Kenya, as well as the modernisation of 160 km of roads.
the Standards and Market Access Programme (€12.1 million) will help to increase the volume, diversity and competitiveness of Kenyan exports. It supports national efforts to enhance food safety standards and regulations for Kenyan plant and animal-based products. The project will also train Kenyan authorities on relevant testing and certification of these products.
Another €5 million will be provided to all other sectors covered by EU programming to ensure that EU projects are well-planned and executed and will be funded out of the EDF in this country. The total available envelope for the 10th EDF in Kenya is approximately €400 million for the 2008-2013 period. (AN/transl.fl).
