EU reiterates its support for unity and stability of Lebanon

Brussels, 23/07/2012 (Agence Europe)- On Monday 23 July, the foreign affairs ministers of the EU reiterated their support for the “independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity” of Lebanon. In their conclusions, they welcome the efforts of the government to overcome divisions and promote unity and peace. The EU also encourages all political leaders to take part in the “national dialogue” to find “sustainable and constructive solutions” to national unity. The EU calls on the Lebanese to refrain from violent actions and urges the authorities to make further efforts to maintain security.

Stressing the importance of “strong, independent, impartial and democratic” public institutions, the EU reiterates its support to the country and its security forces, which have to safeguard the rule of law and ensure security for all citizens. The Council encourages the authorities to continue advancing on “key governance issues of immediate importance”, including the adoption of the budget, nominations to public offices, electoral reform and the implementation of strategic sectoral policies.

Congratulating Lebanon on its efforts to support Syrian refugees, the EU reaffirms its intention of continuing to support Beirut in its handling of the situation. The ministers equally firmly condemned recent incursions and incidents along the border with Syria. The Lebanese president, Michel Sleimane, spoke out on Monday, for the first time, against Syrian violations on Lebanese soil. (CG/transl.fl)
