EU and Lebanon develop partnership

Brussels, 19/07/2012 (Agence Europe) - Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Füle and Lebanon's Minister for the Economy and Trade Nicolas Nahas agreed on Wednesday 18 July on the overall framework for the Action Plan which is to steer mutual cooperation and EU support for Lebanon.

The Plan includes “15 priority objectives, reflecting ongoing reform efforts of the Lebanese government that creates a good and solid basis for additional EU support on top of the current assistance, fully in line with the principle more for more”, Füle announced. These priorities cover not only social and economic issues and good governance but also the civil society and support of vulnerable groups. The two men also agreed on times relating to the next stages aimed at finalisation of the Action Plan “as soon as possible”, the commissioner said.

The Plan's list of priorities had already been discussed in April during the visit by Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati. These priorities are based on the fundamental principles of neighbourhood policy
and on the priorities of the Lebanese government as part of its national programme for economic and social reforms. (CG/transl.jl)
