Greens in EP want ambitious CAP reform

Brussels, 19/07/2012 (Agence Europe) - Greens/EFA Group MEPs José Bové, Martin Haüsling, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Rebecca Harms and Alyn Smith will bring forward proposals for “profound” reform of the common agricultural policy (CAP) in Brussels, on Tuesday 18 September.

Negotiations on the CAP after 2013 are about to enter a decisive phase and it is now for the European Parliament to decide on its position. “For the moment, three European Parliament rapporteurs have examined the European Commission proposals” and the proposals presented so far “are not enough and could cause farmers to leave the sector rather than encourage them to stay”, says a Greens/EFA press release (our translation).

The Greens advocate fairer allocation of public money to farmers and member states and call for more balanced trade, with no dumping and no supremacy of multinational companies. They say the CAP must be “fair, ecological and democratic”. A demonstration by European farmers and European civil society is planned for Brussels on Wednesday 19 September. (LC/transl.rt)
