Brussels, 26/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - The NGO, Amnesty International (AI), urged the European Parliament on Tuesday 26 June to shed full light on abusive practice in Europe perpetrated on behalf of the CIA secret detention programmes. AI has written to all MEPs on the matter, it announces in a press release. Also on Tuesday, it launched a campaign, “Unlock the Truth in Europe”, on detention and renditions to put pressure on member state governments that have still not clarified their involvement in these programmes for secret CIA flights begun after the 11 September attacks, especially Lithuania, Poland and Romania. The NGO also calls on the European Parliament to endorse a report on the subject. The EP civil liberties committee is tackling the task, however, and currently preparing, under the leadership of Hélène Flautre (Greens/EFA, France), a report aimed at updating a first statement of fact drawn up five years ago but which left a series of questions outstanding. The report is due for September. (SP/transl.jl)
