Brussels, 25/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - On 22 June, the EU Council of Ministers adopted conclusions on the impact of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the human health sector and in the veterinary sector, calling upon member states to develop and implement national strategies or action plans for countering AMR. Action plans should set out guidelines on treatment with antimicrobial agents, communication guidelines and programmes for education and training of professionals, and enforcement of national legislation preventing all illegal sales of antimicrobials, and limiting the use of antibiotics. The problem of AMR is a growing one, both in the EU and worldwide, said Danish Minister Astrid Krag Kristensen. Health Commissioner John Dalli was pleased with the conclusions adopted, which chime with Commission priorities. There is a need for coordination and for a cross-cutting, comprehensive approach, he stressed. (IL/transl.rt)
