14/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - EU hails progress on freedom of expression. On Wednesday 13 June, the spokesman for Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Füle, Peter Stano, welcomed the agreement on defamation laws between the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and the journalists association. “This is good news, not only for FYROM but also for the media and media freedom. It is a very good turn of events”, Stano said, highlighting the emphasis that the EU places on freedom of expression and of the media in the accession process. He said that this law is the direct result of the high-level dialogue between the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and the EU, and demonstrates the effectiveness of the EU's overall approach on freedom of expression in the region.
