Brussels, 14/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - On 13 June, the European Commission approved a motorway project in Greece, with funding of up to 85% from European sources. The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is to pay €252 million of the €296 million needed to fund the construction of a little over 200 km of motorway, including 7 tunnels, which will complete the road infrastructure through the Peloponnese region. The roads, which are to be built under a public-private partnership, are part of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T). ERDF investment will allow the creation of 6,000 jobs, and considerably shorten the time taken to cross the region. European Regional Development Commissioner Johannes Hahn has said the project is a “good example of how structural funds can stimulate public-private investment and make it happen. It will connect the Peloponnese region to the rest of Greece and the EU, providing new opportunities for growth”. (MD/transl.jl)
