Brussels, 06/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - More than 220 MEPs of all groups and all nationalities have put their names to a statement calling for the rights of Iranian dissidents to be respected in Camps Ashraf and Liberty in Iraq, Struan Stevenson (ECR, UK), who initiated the statement, announced on Wednesday 6 June. MEPs urge “the UN, United States and the EU to act immediately to compel Iraq to stop imposing callous restrictions on the residents” of the camps. They call on Catherine Ashton to appoint a special EU envoy responsible for the resolution of the Ashraf and Liberty issues. MEPs are also critical of the fact that Camp Liberty is considered to be temporary and want it to be recognised as “a refugee camp under international protection”. (CG/transl.rt)
