EU urges Iran to conclude agreement with IAEA

Brussels, 06/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - The European Union called on Wednesday 6 June on Iran to conclude an agreement “without delay” with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that will allow the Agency to verify the intentions of the country's nuclear programme. The EU points out that since IAEA Director General Yukiya Aman's visit to Tehran on 21 May no agreement has been signed. It is important that Iran guarantee speedy access to all sites, individuals and information on the dates and under the conditions requited by the Agency, the EU says in its statement to the IAEA Board of Governors.

The EU also repeated its grave concern that, six months after a resolution was passed calling on Iran to cooperate fully with the Agency, it has still provided no substantial response to the demands contained in the resolution.

Fresh negotiations between Iran and the IAEA on this framework agreement are due to take place on Friday 8 June. On Tuesday 5 June, US Chargé d'affaires to the Agency Robert Wood added his voice to calls for an agreement to be signed at those talks. He was not, however, hopeful. (CG/transl.rt)
