Brainstorming session between EU, small island states and LDCs

Brussels, 04/05/2012 (Agence Europe) - Talks and cooperation between the EU and its developing country partners, which will be among the first to suffer from the effects of global warming, will continue at meetings in Brussels on Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 May, with an eye firmly on RIO+20, the United Nations conference on sustainable development (20-22 June).

At the start of the week, Climate Action Commissioner Connie Hedegaard and the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU will host a meeting in Brussels with the ministers of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) and the least developed countries (LDCs), along with their counterparts from Latin America, to discuss the follow-up to the global climate conference in Durban (COP 16, December 2011).

The aim of the meeting is to consolidate the “bridges” which brought unhoped-for last-minute progress in global climate negotiations and to discuss arrangements for future cooperation. All the ministers invited will also meet European Environment Commissioner Janez Potocnik and Development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs to define common priorities and objectives and to try to increase the chances of success of RIO+20, at which it is hoped a roadmap for a global green economy will be agreed.
