Brussels, 04/05/2012 (Agence Europe) - Transforming words into action, the European Union has decided, under the terms of the CSDP, to impose targeted sanctions on six people who led the military coup in Guinea Bissau (see EUROPE 10600). A ban on entering the EU and a freeze on assets in the EU has been imposed on the six, who “threaten the peace, security and stability” of the country.
“Today's measures target the leaders of the recent coup d'état in Guinea-Bissau. The EU strongly condemns it and demands that constitutional order be immediately restored”, said High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton in a statement on 3 May.
The so-called “smart” sanctions were published in the Official Journal of the EU of Friday 4 May, the day after they were adopted by written procedure. (AN/transl.rt)
